Spot Starters For This Week

Here are some pitchers to consider picking up this week.

  • Nick Blackburn vs. Mariners.  His last start was decent.
  • Braden Looper vs. Royals.  Looper is rolling, but he may already be rostered.

  • Darrell Rasner vs. Padres.  He's facing Jake Peavy, and was bombed last time out against Oakland.  So it's a risky move.
  • Joel Pineiro vs. Royals.
  • Oliver Perez vs. Angels.  Always a roll of the dice with Perez.

  • Kevin Slowey vs. Nationals.  Coming off a strong start.
  • Todd Wellemeyer vs. Royals.  Very risky one, he may not be healthy.

  • Adam Eaton vs. Angels
  • Jorge Campillo vs. Mariners

  • Nate Robertson vs. Padres.  Solid spot start here.
  • Kevin Correia vs. Royals.  He was rolling in April before his injury.
  • Brett Myers vs. Angels.
  • Jair Jurrjens vs. Mariners.

To be added in the future.

Spot Starts This Week

How about some spot start candidates for the week?

  • Ian Snell vs. Nationals.  Snell is coming off a promising 9 K effort, and he faces the worst offense in baseball.  Time for him to start a roll.
  • Vicente Padilla vs. Royals.  Padilla's peripherals aren't too bad this year.

  • Tom Gorzelanny vs. Nationals.  Gorz hasn't had a quality start in a month, so this is a risky one.
  • Eric Hurley vs. Royals.  It's no accident that the Rangers picked this game for his Major League debut.  He's struggled with the longball in Triple A but could get you some Ks.
  • Hiroki Kuroda vs. Padres.  He may be owned based on his 11 K shutout masterpiece against the Cubs last time out.

  • Doug Davis vs. Royals.  He's been erratic, but hey, the Royals are a bunch of babies.
  • Jeremy Sowers vs. Padres.  He seems to have Triple A under control.  I might try it.

  • Can't find a good one for you here.

  • Jarrod Washburn vs. Nationals.  Pretty risky, but he did beat the Yankees on May 25th.  OK, I'm reaching.  You could also start Washburn's opponent, Tim Redding, in a battle of crappy offenses.
  • Micah Owings vs. Royals.  Perfect time to snap out of his funk, but then again he couldn't beat the Nats on May 30th.

Facing Poor Offenses

Currently the Padres, Nationals, Royals, and Twins have the worst offenses in baseball according to OPS.  Let's find some possible spot starts against those clubs.  We'll toss the Giants in the mix as well but leave out the Indians.

  • Jair Jurrjens vs. Padres.  This is a definite start but he's probably owned in most leagues.
  • Zach Duke vs. Giants.  I just don't trust Duke right now.
  • Shawn Chacon vs. Nationals.  Borderline call.  I don't buy the .264 BABIP and lousy K/BB ratio despite his 3.32 ERA.
  • Nick Adenhart vs. Royals.  The rookie could sink or swim in his second start; too risky.
  • Gavin Floyd vs. Twins.  Floyd is like Chacon but with an even lower BABIP.

  • Phil Dumatrait vs. Giants.  Nope.

  • Paul Maholm vs. Giants.  Normally I'd say yes but he did get bombed by the Nationals last time out.
  • Jo-Jo Reyes vs. Padres.  Intriguing.  I lean toward yes.
  • John Danks vs. Twins.  Yes.
  • Brandon Backe vs. Nationals.  Definitely not.
  • Daniel Cabrera vs. Royals.  Pass - same as Chacon and Floyd.

  • Ricky Nolasco vs. Nationals.  He's a risky one.
  • Steve Trachsel vs. Royals.  No way.
  • Jon Lester vs. Twins.  Definitely a yes.
  • Aaron Cook vs. Padres.  Yes, though he is facing Jake Peavy.

  • Jamie Moyer vs. Giants.  I lean toward yes.
  • Garrett Olson vs. Royals.  Risky - only if you're desperate.
  • Andrew Miller vs. Nationals.  Still don't trust him.
  • Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Padres.  This is a borderline call; I lean toward no.

  • Scott Olsen vs. Nationals.  A clear BABIP guy; only if you're desperate.
  • Brian Burres vs. Royals.   A shaky one; I lean toward no.
  • Mark Redman vs. Padres.  No.
  • Adam Eaton vs. Giants.  He's as ugly as the rest but I'll call him borderline.
  • Tim Wakefield vs. Twins.  I'd go for it.

Matchups For Wednesday

Here we go...couldn't find much in the way of interesting matchups for tomorrow.

Jeff Baker vs. Jonathan Sanchez: 3 for 3, 2 2B
Chris Snyder vs. Shawn Chacon: 4 for 6, 2B
Alfredo Amezaga vs. Chad Billingsley: 4 for 7
Ronny Cedeno vs. Jeff Suppan: 4 for 9, 2B, 3B

  • Jamie Moyer against the Padres is worth considering.
  • Jair Jurrjens against the Nats is a good start.
  • Kevin Millwood against the Royals works.
  • Nick Masset against the Twins...too risky.  Ditto Ubaldo Jimenez vs. the Giants.

Matchups For Tuesday

Let's dig into the matchups for tomorrow.

Ramon Hernandez vs. Jason Hammel: 5 for 12, 3 2B, 3B
J.D. Drew vs. Roy Halladay: 7 for 16, HR
Jason Giambi vs. Kenny Rogers: 10 for 23, 2B, 4 HR
Geoff Jenkins vs. Greg Maddux: 23 for 54, 5 2B, HR
Dmitri Young vs. Tom Glavine: 10 for 26, 3 2B, HR
Corey Patterson vs. Joel Pineiro: 4 for 6, 2 2B, HR

  • Tom Glavine is worth using against the Nationals.
  • I expect the normally lousy KC offense to tee off on Jason Jennings.
  • Gavin Floyd can be used against the Twins (as long as Livan Hernandez doesn't pinch-hit - 3 for 3 with two doubles and a homer!).
  • Aaron Cook against the Giants is solid, though he's probably already owned.
  • Joe Saunders against Oakland is a reasonable spot-start.
