Go Bold or Go Home: Murphy's Mock Draft

Last week, RotoAuthority held a writer-reader mock draft. If you were part of it, then you know that just about everything went wrong that could have that night...but you also know that we surged boldly forward and ended up having a successful, competitive mock. Thanks, by the way, to everyone that drafted with us.

We did our mock in the same format as the RotoAuthority and Silver Leagues: 26 rounds, 5x5 categories and these relatively standard positions:

C, C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, CI, MI, OF, OF, OF, OF, OF, DH, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, P, P, Bench, Bench, Bench

Tim Dierkes drafted 12th, and I was in the cleanup spot. Below the fold is the round by round, with a little commentary on good and bad picks, and whatever else springs to mind.

If you drafted with us, feel more than free to leave a comment with your thoughts. Especially if you disagree with mine!

ROUND 1
Miguel Cabrera, Det 3B Team Rick
Ryan Braun, Mil OF Team Kantecki
Mike Trout, LAA OF Team Geckle
Albert Pujols, LAA 1B   Steers McCrum
Robinson Cano, NYY 2B Team Max
Carlos Gonzalez, Col OF Team Max Kim
Andrew McCutchen, Pit OF Team Polishuk
Matt Kemp, LAD OF Team Desmond
Prince Fielder, Det 1B Syracuse Stars
Troy Tulowitzki, Col SS Team WILSON
Joey Votto, Cin 1B Team Kas
Giancarlo Stanton, Mia OF Team Dierkes

In the fourth slot, I was very torn between Pujols and Cano. Either way, there won't be any elite options in the 2nd round at those positions. In retrospect, I think I lean Cano, but it's close. It seems to me that Tulowitzki is a reach there--I mean, he'll probably still be available by the third pick of the 2nd. Stanton was a bold move, but he totally merits 1st round consideration.

ROUND 2
Buster Posey, SF C Team Dierkes
Justin Upton, Atl OF Team Kas
Justin Verlander, Det SP Team WILSON
Clayton Kershaw, LAD SP Syracuse Stars
Adrian Beltre, Tex 3B Team Desmond
Evan Longoria, TB 3B Team Polishuk
Jose Reyes, Tor SS Team Max Kim
Jose Bautista, Tor OF Team Max
Stephen Strasburg, Wsh SP   Steers McCrum
Felix Hernandez, Sea SP Team Geckle
Hanley Ramirez, LAD 3B Team Kantecki
Adrian Gonzalez, LAD 1B Team Rick

After talking up Strasburg as a 1st rounder, I didn't have much choice to put my money where my mouth is in round two. Also, Jose Bautista is great value at 20th overall, while Justin Upton 14th is setting yourself up for disappointment.

ROUND 3
David Price, TB SP Team Rick
Jason Heyward, Atl OF Team Kantecki
Matt Cain, SF SP Team Geckle
Bryce Harper, Wsh OF   Steers McCrum
David Wright, NYM 3B Team Max
Josh Hamilton, LAA OF Team Max Kim
Cole Hamels, Phi SP Team Polishuk
Cliff Lee, Phi SP Team Desmond
Adam Jones, Bal OF Syracuse Stars
Dustin Pedroia, Bos 2B Team WILSON
Ian Kinsler, Tex 2B Team Kas
Edwin Encarnacion, Tor 1B Team Dierkes

I surprised myself with Harper here. When I don't like someone in their ADP slot (2nd round, for Harper), I don't expect to land them on my team. In this round, I think Cain and Hamilton are reaches, but Encarnacion and Lee should prove to be good investments.

ROUND 4
Zack Greinke, LAD SP Team Dierkes
Starlin Castro, ChC SS Team Kas
Jay Bruce, Cin OF Team WILSON
Jered Weaver, LAA SP Syracuse Stars
Billy Butler, KC 1B Team Desmond
Craig Kimbrel, Atl RP Team Polishuk
Chase Headley, SD 3B Team Max Kim
Jacoby Ellsbury, Bos OF Team Max
Ben Zobrist, TB OF   Steers McCrum
B.J. Upton, Atl OF Team Geckle
Brandon Phillips, Cin 2B Team Kantecki
Michael Bourn, Cle OF Team Rick

Kimbrel is a great investment in the 4th round, but I'm not ready for the risk on Headley. I paid a premium for Zobrist, but his production and flexibility make him one of my prime targets each year. This is too early for someone like Bourn, who does little but steal bases.

ROUND 5
Yoenis Cespedes, Oak OF Team Rick
Yu Darvish, Tex SP Team Kantecki
Yadier Molina, StL C Team Geckle
Matt Holliday, StL OF   Steers McCrum
Adam Wainwright, StL SP Team Max
Ryan Zimmerman, Wsh 3B Team Max Kim
Ian Desmond, Wsh SS Team Polishuk
Gio Gonzalez, Wsh SP Team Desmond
Madison Bumgarner, SF SP Syracuse Stars
Brett Lawrie, Tor 3B Team WILSON
Matt Wieters, Bal C Team Kas
Pablo Sandoval, SF 3B Team Dierkes

I was very excited to snag Holliday in the 5th. Zimmerman and Desmond were smart grabs too, especially when compared to reach picks for Lawrie and Sandoval.

ROUND 6
Aaron Hill, Ari 2B Team Dierkes
R.A. Dickey, Tor SP Team Kas
Joe Mauer, Min C Team WILSON
Allen Craig, StL 1B Syracuse Stars
Austin Jackson, Det OF Team Desmond
Carlos Santana, Cle C Team Polishuk
Paul Goldschmidt, Ari 1B Team Max Kim
Desmond Jennings, TB OF Team Max
Aramis Ramirez, Mil 3B   Steers McCrum
Jason Kipnis, Cle 2B Team Geckle
Jimmy Rollins, Phi SS Team Kantecki
CC Sabathia, NYY SP Team Rick

Tim stole Hill out from under me, but I wasn't disappointed to land Aramis. Goldschmidt lasted long enough to be a pretty good deal. CC Sabathia should prove to be a great choice in this round.

ROUND 7
Johnny Cueto, Cin SP Team Rick
Freddie Freeman, Atl 1B Team Kantecki
Martin Prado, Ari OF Team Geckle
Roy Halladay, Phi SP   Steers McCrum
Chris Sale, CWS SP Team Max
Aroldis Chapman, Cin SP Team Max Kim
Alex Gordon, KC OF Team Polishuk
Mat Latos, Cin SP Team Desmond
Victor Martinez, Det C Syracuse Stars
Mark Teixeira, NYY 1B Team WILSON
Jordan Zimmermann, Wsh SP Team Kas
Max Scherzer, Det SP Team Dierkes

I was excited to nab Halladay in the 7th. This part of the draft gets a little rocky to me, as a lot of the picks look like they should be better, even though the elite players are actually gone. With the depth at catcher, I think this is way too early for V-Mart.

ROUND 8
Shin-Soo Choo, Cin OF Team Dierkes
Alex Rios, CWS OF Team Kas
James Shields, KC SP Team WILSON
Kris Medlen, Atl SP Syracuse Stars
Elvis Andrus, Tex SS Team Desmond
Asdrubal Cabrera, Cle SS Team Polishuk
Jose Altuve, Hou 2B Team Max Kim
Ike Davis, NYM 1B Team Max
Jonathan Papelbon, Phi RP   Steers McCrum
Melky Cabrera, Tor OF Team Geckle
Matt Moore, TB SP Team Kantecki
Chase Utley, Phi 2B Team Rick

This group was slow to take relievers, which I respect. I grabbed Papelbon partly because nobody else was really catching my interest. Utley is a really bold choice here, but I think he could have been waited on a bit longer. Shields and Choo seem like particularly good value here.

ROUND 9
Andre Ethier, LAD OF Team Rick
Jason Motte, StL RP Team Kantecki
Eric Hosmer, KC 1B Team Geckle
Anthony Rizzo, ChC 1B   Steers McCrum
David Ortiz, Bos DH Team Max
Curtis Granderson, NYY OF Team Max Kim
Yovani Gallardo, Mil SP Team Polishuk
Mark Trumbo, LAA OF Team Desmond
Josh Willingham, Min OF Syracuse Stars
Carlos Gomez, Mil OF Team WILSON
Rafael Soriano, Wsh RP Team Kas
Tim Lincecum, SF SP Team Dierkes

Anthony Rizzo looks like a pretty good target at this point; he seems to be going a lot earlier in many drafts. Ditto for Trumbo and Willingham. Gomez is a puzzling choice to me: I really like him, but not 9th round like him. I wouldn't have expected Gallardo to last this long, or Lincecum to go this early. If Granderson comes back without problems, this could be great value for an elite power hitter.

ROUND 10
Nelson Cruz, Tex OF Team Dierkes
Fernando Rodney, TB RP Team Kas
Mariano Rivera, NYY RP Team WILSON
Carlos Beltran, StL OF Syracuse Stars
Neil Walker, Pit 2B Team Desmond
David Freese, StL 3B Team Polishuk
Salvador Perez, KC C Team Max Kim
Jonathon Niese, NYM SP Team Max
Nick Swisher, Cle OF   Steers McCrum
Brandon Morrow, Tor SP Team Geckle
Hunter Pence, SF OF Team Kantecki
Rickie Weeks, Mil 2B Team Rick

There's almost literally nothing special about Swisher in the 10th. He's dependable, and my offense needed some dependability. Beltran and Rivera were who I really wanted here.

ROUND 11
Jim Johnson, Bal RP Team Rick
Jesus Montero, Sea C Team Kantecki
Erick Aybar, LAA SS Team Geckle
Wilin Rosario, Col C   Steers McCrum
Alcides Escobar, KC SS Team Max
J.J. Putz, Ari RP Team Max Kim
Howard Kendrick, LAA 2B Team Polishuk
Josh Johnson, Tor SP Team Desmond
Shane Victorino, Bos OF Syracuse Stars
Danny Espinosa, Wsh 2B Team WILSON
Doug Fister, Det SP Team Kas
Jeff Samardzija, ChC SP Team Dierkes

Catchers were coming off the board slowly, but I couldn't take the chance that anyone else left the draft with Wilin Rosario. Samardzija and Espinosa could be great picks here.

ROUND 12
Mike Napoli, Bos C Team Dierkes
Ian Kennedy, Ari SP Team Kas
Paul Konerko, CWS 1B Team WILSON
Derek Jeter, NYY SS Syracuse Stars
Miguel Montero, Ari C Team Desmond
Chris Davis, Bal 1B Team Polishuk
Marco Estrada, Mil SP Team Max Kim
Ryan Howard, Phi 1B Team Max
Jake Peavy, CWS SP   Steers McCrum
Joel Hanrahan, Bos RP Team Geckle
Joe Nathan, Tex RP Team Kantecki
Michael Morse, Sea OF Team Rick

Maybe I'm channeling three years ago, but I was stoked to make Peavy my third starter this late in the draft. I think Hanrahan will be a big disappointment, but Nathan was a high-quality choice. Also, I found the only person in the world more excited about Marco Estrada than I am. I was sure he'd still be there in another round or two.

ROUND 13
Ryan Doumit, Min C Team Rick
Matt Harvey, NYM SP Team Kantecki
Adam LaRoche, Wsh 1B Team Geckle
Brian McCann, Atl C   Steers McCrum
Jonathan Lucroy, Mil C Team Max
Dan Haren, Wsh SP Team Max Kim
Torii Hunter, Det OF Team Polishuk
Angel Pagan, SF OF Team Desmond
Andrelton Simmons, Atl SS Syracuse Stars
Jon Lester, Bos SP Team WILSON
Hiroki Kuroda, NYY SP Team Kas
Lance Lynn, StL SP Team Dierkes

I reached a little for McCann, but I don't regret it: my strategy has been to get both catchers taken care of mid-draft. If I have to wait a month for McCann, I can afford it, since he's only my number two guy. LaRoche was a great choice, as the best hitter left in the draft, but I think Simmons went way too early. His upside just isn't all that high.

ROUND 14
Michael Cuddyer, Col OF Team Dierkes
Anibal Sanchez, Det SP Team Kas
Carl Crawford, LAD OF Team WILSON
Brett Gardner, NYY OF Syracuse Stars
John Axford, Mil RP Team Desmond
Greg Holland, KC RP Team Polishuk
Sergio Romo, SF RP Team Max Kim
Huston Street, SD RP Team Max
Jason Grilli, Pit RP   Steers McCrum
Jarrod Parker, Oak SP Team Geckle
Addison Reed, CWS RP Team Kantecki
Josh Reddick, Oak OF Team Rick

Closer run! I was happy to have Grilli, who pitched better than all but two or three closers last year. I had been hoping to nab Reddick for his power in the very next round. Sanchez was a good choice here too; I think he's a step ahead of the other available players.

ROUND 15
Brett Anderson, Oak SP Team Rick
Mike Moustakas, KC 3B Team Kantecki
Alejandro De Aza, CWS OF Team Geckle
Mike Minor, Atl SP   Steers McCrum

Chris Perez, Cle RP Syracuse Stars
Jason Kubel, Ari OF Team WILSON
Ben Revere, Phi OF Team Kas
Nick Markakis, Bal OF Team Dierkes

I wasn't excited about Minor, but I think he'll be a boon to my pitching staff. Revere and Kubel could be good value here.

ROUND 16
Jonathan Broxton, Cin RP Team Dierkes
Dexter Fowler, Col OF Team Kas
Grant Balfour, Oak RP Team WILSON
Jurickson Profar, Tex 2B Syracuse Stars
Jeremy Hellickson, TB SP Team Desmond
Todd Frazier, Cin 3B Team Polishuk
Norichika Aoki, Mil OF Team Max Kim
Jayson Werth, Wsh OF Team Max
Dan Uggla, Atl 2B   Steers McCrum
J.J. Hardy, Bal SS Team Geckle
Homer Bailey, Cin SP Team Kantecki
Tom Wilhelmsen, Sea RP Team Rick

At this point, I'm hoping that Uggla can get just a little BABIP love and hold onto the power for another year. We'll see. Todd Frazier is a great choice this late--that's who I really wanted to take.

ROUND 17
A.J. Pierzynski, Tex C Team Rick
Alfonso Soriano, ChC OF Team Kantecki
Manny Machado, Bal 3B Team Geckle
Everth Cabrera, SD SS   Steers McCrum
Glen Perkins, Min RP Team Max
Steve Cishek, Mia RP Team Max Kim
Kenley Jansen, LAD RP Team Polishuk
Casey Janssen, Tor RP Team Desmond
Wade Miley, Ari SP Syracuse Stars
Carlos Ruiz, Phi C Team WILSON
Kyle Seager, Sea 3B Team Kas
Alexei Ramirez, CWS SS Team Dierkes

I reached on Cabrera, and reached big, but his high SB potential was the only upside left at MI. Miley looks like great value, strikeouts or not. Soriano is a nice late power play, and Seager could be a nice pickup too.

ROUND 18
Brandon League, LAD RP Team Dierkes
Tim Hudson, Atl SP Team Kas
Ernesto Frieri, LAA RP Team WILSON
Ryan Vogelsong, SF SP Syracuse Stars
Kendrys Morales, Sea 1B Team Desmond
Colby Rasmus, Tor OF Team Polishuk
Josh Rutledge, Col SS Team Max Kim
Trevor Cahill, Ari SP Team Max
Ichiro Suzuki, NYY OF   Steers McCrum
Bruce Rondon, Det RP Team Geckle
Justin Morneau, Min 1B Team Kantecki
Jed Lowrie, Oak SS Team Rick

Even with Cabrera, I felt light on speed; Ichiro cured that. Rutledge ought to be a nice bargain here. Any of League, Frieri, and Rondon might pay off well...or they might not. If Lowrie is healthy and playing, then he could be value here. But that's a big if.

ROUND 19
Michael Young, Phi 1B Team Rick
Emilio Bonifacio, Tor OF Team Kantecki
Dayan Viciedo, CWS OF Team Geckle
Lance Berkman, Tex 1B   Steers McCrum
Denard Span, Wsh OF Team Max
Alex Avila, Det C Team Max Kim
David Murphy, Tex OF Team Polishuk
Marco Scutaro, SF 2B Team Desmond
Joaquin Benoit, Det RP Syracuse Stars
Corey Hart, Mil 1B Team WILSON
Coco Crisp, Oak OF Team Kas
Jean Segura, Mil SS Team Dierkes

Berkman's a big risk as my starting DH, but in the 19th round, how could I say no? A lot of filling out the roster here, though Hart is an interesting risk. If he's quick coming back, this could be a huge value. If he comes back slowly, this could be a wasted pick.

ROUND 20
Lorenzo Cain, KC OF Team Dierkes
Will Middlebrooks, Bos 3B Team Kas
Derek Holland, Tex SP Team WILSON
Kevin Youkilis, NYY 3B Syracuse Stars
Jaime Garcia, StL SP Team Desmond
A.J. Burnett, Pit SP Team Polishuk
Justin Ruggiano, Mia OF Team Max Kim
A.J. Ellis, LAD C Team Max
Mike Fiers, Mil SP   Steers McCrum
Matt Garza, ChC SP Team Geckle
Garrett Jones, Pit 1B Team Kantecki
Josh Beckett, LAD SP Team Rick

Why was Will Middlebrooks still available? More importantly, why didn't I draft him myself? I'm happy to take an upside play with Fiers, though. If Beckett has anything left in the tank, he could be a nice pickup, but I'm not one of his believers anymore.

ROUND 21
Carlos Marmol, ChC RP Team Rick
Edwin Jackson, ChC SP Team Kantecki
Tommy Hanson, LAA SP Team Geckle
Kyuji Fujikawa, ChC RP   Steers McCrum

Peter Bourjos, LAA OF Team Max Kim
Jon Jay, StL OF Team Polishuk

Tommy Milone, Oak SP Syracuse Stars
Ryan Madson, LAA RP Team WILSON
Chris Carpenter*, StL SP Team Kas
Jose Veras, Hou RP Team Dierkes

Normally, I'm not one to take a closer-in-waiting, but the Cubbies seem very determined to ship Marmol away, possibly before Opening Day. Veras is a real closer, so I like that pick a lot, and Jackson is a dependable guy who adds a few strikeouts.

ROUND 22
Tyler Colvin, Col OF Team Dierkes
Cameron Maybin, SD OF Team Kas
Brandon Belt, SF 1B Team WILSON
Frank Francisco, NYM RP Syracuse Stars

Dustin Ackley, Sea 2B Team Geckle
Daniel Murphy, NYM 2B Team Kantecki
Paul Maholm, Atl SP Team Rick

This is about the point where my Internet connection cut off and couldn't be restored until after the draft. Talk about timing. Adam Dunn is a great choice here. I have no idea why he was still available. Technically, Ackley has some upside--he and Murphy are decent MI choices this late.

ROUND 23
Ryan Dempster, Bos SP Team Rick
John Jaso, Oak C Team Kantecki
Ryan Cook, Oak RP Team Geckle
Phil Hughes, NYY SP   Steers McCrum

Drew Stubbs, Cle OF Syracuse Stars
Jason Vargas, LAA SP Team WILSON
Brandon McCarthy, Ari SP Team Kas
Ivan Nova, NYY SP Team Dierkes

I really like Dempster and McCarthy in this round: they could be worth a lot more than this. This is a good time to stash Myers, as well.

ROUND 24
Adam Eaton, Ari OF Team Dierkes
Kyle Lohse, FA SP Team Kas
Chris Young, Oak OF Team WILSON
Russell Martin, Pit C Syracuse Stars

J.P. Arencibia, Tor C Team Geckle
David Robertson, NYY RP Team Kantecki
Carlos Quentin, SD OF Team Rick

Martin, Reynolds, Arencibia, and Quentin all have a decent non-zero chance of adding impact power. This late, there's no reason why not. The Santos pick is looking very good a week later. Eaton is my favorite kind of prospect: one with a starting job.

ROUND 25
Jhonny Peralta, Det SS Team Rick
David Hernandez, Ari RP Team Kantecki
Trevor Bauer, Cle SP Team Geckle
Trevor Plouffe, Min 3B   Steers McCrum

Alex Cobb, TB SP Team Polishuk
Logan Morrison, Mia OF Team Desmond
Shaun Marcum, NYM SP Syracuse Stars
Alex Rodriguez*, NYY 3B Team WILSON
Omar Infante, Det 2B Team Kas
Phil Coke, Det RP Team Dierkes

Hernandez is one of my top RP targets outside of the closers. I would normally think that Marcum was amazing value here, but the way MLB teams shied away from him in the offseason makes me nervous for next year. Cobb is an interesting upside play, and Infante is better than he seems at MI.

ROUND 26
Andy Dirks, Det OF Team Dierkes
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Bos C Team Kas
Yasmani Grandal, SD C Team WILSON
Clay Buchholz, Bos SP Syracuse Stars
Chad Billingsley, LAD SP Team Desmond
Rob Brantly, Mia C Team Polishuk
Brandon Moss, Oak 1B Team Max Kim
Starling Marte, Pit OF Team Max
Juan Pierre, Mia OF   Steers McCrum
Shelby Miller, StL RP Team Geckle
Cory Luebke, SD SP Team Kantecki
Sean Marshall, Cin RP Team Rick

Would I love to get a 20+ HR catcher in the last round? Yes I would. Salty shouldn't have lasted this long. Luebke is a good DL stash. Moss is a longshot, but he should have the job in Oakland, so why not give him a try? The ESPN computer gave me Pierre, but I couldn't be happier to have him on my team: steals might be the easiest stat to get from a part time player.

If you made it this far down, I think it's only fair that you get to leave a comment. What do you think of our draft?
