2009 RotoAuthority League

Checking In On The RotoAuthority League

The RotoAuthority League is a fierce 12-team mixed league battle.  Let's take a look at the current standings, here at the All-Star break.

  1. Cult of Personality - 93.5
  2. Men With Wood - 81
  3. Waveland Avenue - 79.5
  4. A Century Of Misery - 75.5
  5. Ghostride the WHIP - 68.5
  6. Santas Magic Janitor - 68
  7. Depressed Fan - 60.5
  8. Miss Conception - 60.5
  9. Smell The Glove - 53.5
  10. Philly Cheez - 53
  11. Dizzy Llamas - 51.5
  12. Broken Down Volvos - 35

The league has a $100 buy-in, so the pot is substantial.  And on the flip side, the bottom four teams are kicked out.  Many of us are jockeying to get to 8th place.

Why is Cult Of Personality running away with the league?  Let's take a look at his draft by round, starting with the second overall pick:

  1. Jose Reyes
  2. B.J. Upton
  3. Prince Fielder
  4. Alex Rios
  5. Curtis Granderson
  6. Felix Hernandez
  7. Ryan Zimmerman
  8. Yovani Gallardo
  9. Carlos Pena
  10. Adam Wainwright
  11. Chris Iannetta
  12. Jose Lopez
  13. Matt Capps (traded with Street for Michael Young on May 13)
  14. Ervin Santana (dropped June 2)
  15. Josh Johnson
  16. Shin-Soo Choo
  17. Billy Butler (dropped April 21)
  18. Huston Street
  19. Wandy Rodriguez
  20. Adam Lind (dropped March 22)
  21. Aaron Hill (traded for Matt Cain on May 24)
  22. Jordan Zimmermann (dropped April 5)
  23. Yadier Molina
  24. Jeremy Hermida (dropped June 6)
  25. Josh Fields (dropped May 13)
  26. Jose Arredondo (dropped March 18)

Key pickups: Asdrubal Cabrera, Michael Cuddyer, Cody Ross, and J.A. Happ.  With 31 moves, Cult has not been nearly as active as most teams in the league.  It's paid off.  And he only had one glaring bad drop in Lind.  He has a stacked outfield and a speedy team, despite the loss of Reyes.  And look at those sleepers coming through!  The team has only two weaknesses: AVG for 6 points (not that bad), and a 1 in saves with the decision to punt the category and avoid the waiver wire madness.

At least at this point, Cult is proof that A) you can punt saves in a tough league and B) you can get past a first-round bust.

RotoAuthority League Standings

A month is in the books for the RotoAuthority 5x5 Mixed League.  The standings:

  1. Men With Wood - 92
  2. Cult of Personality - 85
  3. Depressed Fan - 78
  4. Philly Cheez - 75
  5. Santa's Magic Janitor - 68.5
  6. Miss Conception - 67
  7. Waveland Avenue - 64.5
  8. Ghostride the WHIP - 62
  9. A Century of Misery - 51.5
  10. Dizzy Llamas - 50
  11. Volvo Wagon Dynasty - 46.5
  12. RotoAuthority - 40

Yes, that's me in dead last.  I am last in runs and RBI, second to last in HR and AVG, and not faring well in ERA and WHIP.  Top offenders: Soto, Snyder, Derrek Lee, Rollins, Randy Johnson, Parra, Kawakami, and Purcey.  Yikes.

Why is Men With Wood in the lead?  They've got Bengie Molina, Kinsler, Cantu, Swisher, Jeter, Dye, Bay, Lohse, Broxton, Cordero, and Lincecum.

My RotoAuthority League Team Is Insanely Bad

I have a question...will you guys stop reading if I finish last in the RotoAuthority League?  Because currently I'm mired in 12th with 38.5 points.  I try to recite all the standard advice about patience, but jeez...38.5 points?  I know you can dig out of a hole quickly when it's this early, but I need to double my points and then some.  Here's the team:

C - Geovany Soto
C - Chris Snyder
1B - Derrek Lee
2B - Brian Roberts
SS - Jimmy Rollins
3B - Chipper Jones
CI - Carlos Delgado
MI - Rickie Weeks
OF - Carlos Beltran
OF - Hunter Pence
OF - Bobby Abreu
OF - Ryan Spilborghs
OF - Hideki Matsui
DH - Scott Rolen

SP - Roy Halladay
SP - Matt Cain
SP - Randy Johnson
SP - Manny Parra
SP - Kenshin Kawakami
SP - David Purcey
RP - Brian Wilson
RP - George Sherrill
RP - Scott Downs

Bn - Jack Cust
Bn - Joe Nelson
Bn - Manny Corpas

DL - John Lackey
DL - Kelvim Escobar

I just traded Jose Valverde to get Bobby Abreu.  That can be a dangerous move in a league like this, where almost every backup closer is already rostered.  Competition for saves is fierce.

Spilborghs and Matsui are on thin ice, but it's only been 8-9 games so they deserve a little slack.  Still, I can tell this team is probably going to be short on RBIs.  Soto and Rollins haven't contributed yet.

I created a shaky bullpen situation by trading Valverde, since Sherrill is no lock.  But I figure Downs and/or Corpas will get a shot unless B.J. Ryan and Huston Street turn it around in a hurry.  I still think the rotation will be OK...that's probably the easiest part of the roster to stock via the waiver wire if a few of these guys crap out.  Plus Lackey is on the way.  I made that pick before he was hurt, and I am kicking myself for taking two pitchers early in Halladay and Lackey.

RotoAuthority League Rosters

The 2009 RotoAuthority League drafted last night.  I picked eighth.  Here's my team, draft round in parentheses:

C - Geovany Soto (5)
C - Chris Snyder (19)
1B - Derrek Lee (8)
2B - Brian Roberts (3)
SS - Jimmy Rollins (1)
3B - Chipper Jones (6)
MI - Rickie Weeks (12)
CI - Carlos Delgado (13)
OF - Carlos Beltran (2)
OF - Hunter Pence (7)
OF - Hideki Matsui (15)
OF - Ryan Spilborghs (17)
OF - Gary Sheffield (22)
DH - Todd Helton (23)
SP - Roy Halladay (4)
SP - John Lackey (9)
SP - Matt Cain (10)
SP - Randy Johnson (14)
SP - Kenshin Kawakami (18)
SP - Manny Parra (21)
RP - Jose Valverde (11)
RP - Brian Wilson (16)
RP - George Sherrill (20)

Bench: Manny Corpas, Kelvim Escobar, Ken Griffey Jr.

This team's weakness is the outfield.  A lot of guys I considered undervalued were snapped up several rounds early, so I nabbed Halladay and Lackey instead.  Hopefully I can get a bat or two off the waiver wire during the season, because help in every offensive category.  My pitching is light on Ks, but if Johnson, Kawakami, and Parra only pitch the 500 total innings I've projected for them, I'll get more off the wire.
