Power/Speed Shortstops

Looking for double digit HRs and SBs from your shortstop?  At this point I'm projecting six options:

  • Jose Reyes
  • Hanley Ramirez
  • Jimmy Rollins
  • Alexei Ramirez
  • Rafael Furcal
  • Derek Jeter

If you don't spring for one of the first-rounders, you're looking at Ramirez (fifth round), Furcal (sixth round), and Jeter (eighth round).  All three have their flaws, but Alexei interests me the most.  Sophomore slump or a leap into fantasy stardom?

Five other shortstops who could sneak into double digits in both HRs and SBs: Michael Young, Mike Aviles, Edgar Renteria, Felipe Lopez (assuming 13 games cuts it), and Asdrubal Cabrera.  Three with playing time questions: Brandon Wood, Clint Barmes, and Ben Zobrist.

Alexei may not have Soriano upside but he's a good comp. Age and athleticism make it a good bet!
I think Jeter falls short and Barmes sneaks in.

I think getting one of the Big 3 SS's really puts you a step ahead after Round 1 this year

Ramirez in the 5th? Blah. SS going into '09 is so weak I could spring for him a little earlier for a minimum 25/25 combo, even more benefits if he's bumped up in the lineup. Sure he has a hole in his swing, but this is fantasy baseball!

In the mocks I've done so far this year, I've been able to skip those six and opt for Hardy or Peralta in the 11th or so, and then make up the SB difference with Theriot or Bartlett as a MI in the 17th or 18th. Why reach for Jeter in the 7th when you can have a solid Ludwick or Dye there and wait on your SS?

Let other people reach for mediocre numbers from Rollins unless your plan is to draft him then trade him early in the season.

I don't know Iowa...I'd strongly prefer to have the HRs and SBs coming from one roster spot.

Tim:

Do you have an idea when you will be updating your 'What It Takes To Win' series this season? :)

I'm liking roto's new look.

Any chance Stephen Drew gets to double digit steals this season? He was perfect in 9 attempts in '07, but ran very little last year.

Those guys aren't ranked by desirability on that list, are they? Because I'm pretty sure Hanley's an obvious choice over Reyes. At least to me. I wish Fredi Gonzalez would let him run more like he did in his first two years though (51 SB each).

The main problem with Jeter is that he always tries to play through injuries instead of resting and healing up quickly.

What are the projections for Aviles this year? Is he the real deal?

I have Reyes over Hanley, but it's by about a dollar so it really doesn't mean anything. But to say Hanley's an obvious choice over Reyes, I disagree with that.

Aviles: .282-12-70-76-9 in 571 ABs.

Reyes over Hanley eh? I'm having trouble deciding on a trade in my dynasty league right now. I've been offered Reyes and Adam Dunn for my Hanley Ramirez and Joakim Soria, and feel like all signs point towards Hanley becoming a 40-40 SS, while Reyes stays around a 15-50 kind of player. Would this trade be at all beneficial for me?

I think its likely if Tulowitzki bats 2nd like he's projected that he'll get the green light on more steals, particularly with Taveres gone.

What about Yunel Escobar? I realize he does not have much speed, but where would he rank?

Where would Alexi Ramirez rank amongst 2B, since he is eligible there as well?

Article suggestion/request time!

I'd really love an article breaking down true position scarcity. If it were boiled down to a ranking of positions by scarcity would be pretty cool too.

My sense is over the last season 2B has gotten deeper and SS more shallow. Catcher is still the most shallow, I'd guess.

You'd obviously have to take into account how many 2B, SS, MI, OF, etc. are on a team, how many teams are in the league, single leagues vs. mixed leagues, etc. (You can make up for one mediocre OF pick with a couple of shrewd ones, but if you nab a lousy 3B, you're far more screwed.)

How about it, Tim?

ncbowman- You probably weren't asking me, but if you want my opinion, I'd take that trade. I know the Marlins don't want Hanley running as much as he used to, so his SBs might fall to around 30, but he definitely has power that Reyes doesn't. And you get the power without Dunn's avg pulling you down. (Poor guy is so much worse in fantasy than real life.) And I don't think you can go wrong with one of the best young closers in the game, but it may partially depend on your team, I guess.

Tim, it's interesting that you say that because most of the people in my dynasty league seem to prefer Hanley too. He went first overall with Reyes going fifth (although I have to say, it was a very strange first round. I got A-Rod at 7.). Nonetheless, Reyes obviously trumps Hanley in steals, but it's not like Hanley is a slouch there. The only year that Reyes was clearly better was when Hanley was a rookie and Reyes had his best season, and even then he wasn't far behind in R/HR/AVG. I could go on, but my point is, unless you value steals a lot, Hanley is the much more complete player. I'd love to hear an argument in favor of Reyes though, just to see the other point of view. Mostly everything I've seen rates Hanley first.

Whoa, bowman, sorry. I read it backwards before. I would definitely keep Hanley and Soria. Argument is the same, but I misunderstood who had which players. My bad.

Tim, is Alexi going to have problems reaching 600 ABs?

Thus Reyes and Hanley more or less cancel. I do value highly the fact that Reyes is going to steal 60 to Hanley's 30 bases but I also like the bonus 12 HRs coming from Hanley. All in all though I would have to say finding HRs is easier than SBs and 60 from one guy can anchor an entire team.
