April '08 Surprises: Hitters

The first month of the 2008 season is in the books.  Here are the biggest surprises at each position; it will be fun to look back on this post to see which held up.  I'll define surprise as players who the average fantasy player might not have seen coming (since RotoAuthority readers are an advanced crowd).

Catcher: Geovany Soto.  He was named as a sleeper in February, but we didn't expect this.  Could Geo hit 25 or knock in 80+? Runner up: Ryan Doumit.

First Base: Conor Jackson.  He's behind only Derrek Lee and Lance Berkman.  Jackson is another who was no surprise to the RotoAuthority crowd.  I could see .310-25-100 from him.  Runner up: Casey Kotchman.

Second Base: Ryan Theriot.  He's ranked fifth because of a .323 AVG, 19 runs, and seven steals.  He could swipe 30 and score 90. Runner up: Jose Lopez.

Shortstop: Rafael Furcal.  Proof that it's OK to reach for a guy a few rounds early if you really want him.  Furcal in the sixth is looking good.  Runner up: Miguel Tejada.

Third Base: Mark Reynolds.  Massive power numbers plus three swipes erase the .245 AVG.  I'm skeptical on him hitting 30 bombs this year. Runner up: Joe Crede.

Outfield: Nate McLouth.  I liked him but didn't expect seven home runs in a month.  Don't sell high on him.  Runners up: Josh Hamilton, Pat Burrell, Carlos Quentin.
