My Fantasy Baseball Search Roster

One of my five leagues is the Fantasy Baseball Search one, consisting of a bunch of fantasy baseball bloggers and such.  We drafted on Monday evening.  I violated one of the cardinal rules of fantasy baseball: know your league settings.

I knew it was a 5x5, and seeing 26-man rosters led me to believe it'd have the standard 14 active hitters and nine active pitchers.  It was pretty dumb of me not to confirm this info prior to the draft, or even during the early rounds of it.

Instead, the active spots are C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, and eight pitchers.  There's a deep eight man bench.  It's a head-to-head mixed league by the way.

This doesn't wildly change the strategy, but I sure as hell wouldn't have drafted two catchers if I'd realized it.  I'm sitting there with the 141st pick in Round 12, shocked to see Jorge Posada still out there.  I had already taken Russell Martin 45th, which I considered a steal at the time.  So I picked Posada too instead of one of the solid available starters like Dustin McGowan.  Oops.  Maybe I can trade Posada for pitching.

Despite the misstep, I assembled a squad that I love.  I even remember thinking mid-draft that everything was going as well as I possibly could've hoped.  I had the 4th overall pick, and chose David Wright as I'd mentioned I would.  Here's what I ended up with:

C - Russell Martin (Round 4)
1B - Lance Berkman (3)
2B - Brian Roberts (5)
SS - Rafael Furcal (7)
3B - David Wright (1)
OF - Alfonso Soriano (2)
OF - Corey Hart (6)
OF - Matt Kemp (10)
Util - Kosuke Fukudome (15)
Util - Todd Helton (14)

P - Javier Vazquez (8)
P - Tim Lincecum (9)
P - A.J. Burnett (13)
P - Zack Greinke (21)
P - Hiroki Kuroda (18)
P - Greg Maddux (20)
RP - Matt Capps (11)
RP - B.J. Ryan (16)

Bn - Jorge Posada (12)
Bn - Lastings Milledge (19)
Bn - Kelvim Escobar (17)
Bn - Homer Bailey (22)
Bn - Matt Garza (24)
Bn - Joaquin Benoit (26)
Bn - Moises Alou (23)
Bn - Melky Cabrera (25)

  • I consider my offense stacked.  I have offense coming out the ears.  I couldn't believe Soriano was there at the 21st pick.  But I liked it.  My offense is pretty well balanced, without Juan Pierres or Adam Dunns.
  • I decided to chill until Round 8 before taking a pitcher - put my pitcher-choosing skills to the test.  Obviously the staff carries a decent amount of risk.  But I'll play around on the waiver wire as I do.  And Escobar - the guy's not dead, far as I know.  Most drafts overestimate season-opening injuries, and this was no exception.
  • I'd like to have some kind of third option for saves, but half the saves come off the wire each year anyway. I'm not going to bend over backwards for George Sherrill.
