Second Half Sleepers - Pittsburgh Pirates

Can anything be salvaged from Pittsburgh, sleeper-wise?  The Roto Authority has the scoop.

Chris Duffy is a 25 year-old rookie, and he's not going to be a star.  This isn't a guy you want in your fantasy baseball outfield.  Don't be fooled by his .388 average.

Ryan Doumit has power, and he could develop into a Damian Miller type within a couple of years.  An OK backup catcher if you're somewhat desperate.

Guess we were wrong on Jose Mesa being a "near-lock" to be traded.  Hey, even Authorities miss the boat once in a while.  We deserve some credit, as the Pirates at least tried to deal him.  Strangely, they might even want Mesa back in 2006, according to the Pittsburgh Post-GazetteMike Gonzalez has been slow to return from his knee ligament - he's just now starting a rehab assignment.  We are big fans of Gonzalez, but his value takes a hit with the Mesa-worship.  Patrick Lackey sums up the idea of bringing Mesa back on his Pirates blog in only three words.

Oliver Perez should be back around September from his toe injury.  We just can't believe that Perez has given back all his gains from his breakout 2004 season.  Take a flier on him this year and in 2006 as you could easily have a high strikeout ace on your hands.  Consider dealing for him while his value is at an all-time low.

What more can be said about Zach Duke and his 5-0 record?  Obviously, his 1.54 ERA won't last.  Check out our previous writings concerning Duke for more theories.  Overall, Duke's a keeper.  The Pirates need him right now.  As blogger Steve over at Walking the Plank remarks, "The only reason to watch the Pirates at this point is to see Zach Duke pitch."

The Roto Authority suggests that the Pirates bring back the old-school 80s caps as a means of rejuvenating the franchise.  Jody Gerut just ain't cuttin' it.
